Part of the VANGuard

This guy lived in a van, on the Duke campus.

Or so he says.

How was his proximity to the river? Any experience as a motivational speaker?

OR you could of delayed entry into grad school for a couple of years and saved up to afford a nice efficiency apartment without going in to debt. But then he couldn't cast himself as a rebel. Sorry dude, I went to grad school in Alaska where lots of people don't shower and don't get articles in Salon.

with all that consideration of costs (and it was an interesting article), I really wonder why he chose to go to Duke? Good school, no doubt, but worth the price when you obviously don't have the means?

What is the "graduate liberal studies department"?

Dude's concern for getting caught where he was parked seems to miss the fact that the van has wheels and a motor, and can be parked anydamnwhere you might choose to drive it.

And there are certainly neighborhoods in Durham where one can live very cheaply, and/or where someone "living in a van" would not really be questioned.

That's what I did, but only for a week. Arrived at Duke for grad school without a place to stay, and while arranging an apartment share, lived in the U-haul van I had rented to move up from Florida. Not fun, but no hassles. On a couple of warm nights, slept on the grass outside the van.
